Why React Sites Struggle with SEO
React was designed as a client-side UI library. By default, a React app sends a minimal HTML shell to the browser, then JavaScript builds the entire page. Search engine crawlers that don't execute JavaScript (or execute it poorly) see an empty <div id="root"></div>.
While Google executes JavaScript, it does so with a delay (the "render queue"), limited resources, and sometimes incomplete execution. Other search engines (Bing, Yandex) and AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) often have weaker JS execution capabilities.
React-Specific SEO Issues We Detect
- Empty initial HTML. The server sends an HTML shell with no content. JS-Trim Ratio approaches 0% — critically bad for SEO.
- Client-side routing. React Router navigations don't generate new HTTP requests. Crawlers may miss internal pages if they don't execute JS link clicks.
- useEffect-loaded content. Content loaded in
useEffect only appears after component mount. Server-side rendering or static generation avoids this.
- Dynamic
<title> and meta tags. React Helmet or similar libraries set metadata client-side. Without SSR, crawlers see the default title.
- Hash-based routing.
/#/page URLs are invisible to crawlers. Only /page path-based routing works for SEO.
Solutions
- Use SSR or SSG. Next.js, Remix, or Gatsby add server-side rendering to React. This is the most impactful fix.
- Implement prerendering. Tools like prerender.io serve static HTML to crawlers while users get the SPA experience.
